The weekly Cybersecurity Lecture Series is a free, open-to-the-public lecture from a thought leader who is advancing the field of information security and privacy. Invited speakers include executives and researchers from private companies, government agencies, start-up incubators as well as Georgia Tech faculty and students presenting their research.
Held weekly each Friday at Noon through Dec. 2, lectures are open to all -- students, faculty, industry, government, or simply the curious. Students may register for credit under seminar course CS-8001-INF.

“The Evolution of Data Privacy: From Concept to Execution"
ABSTRACT | Data is everywhere. On one hand, big data analytics and big data technology hold the potential to enrich and transform our social and work life. On the other hand, big data analytics compound with a growing variety of social media to also open doors for both intrusions of individual and organizational privacy, risks of misuse and abuse of big data. In this seminar, I will examine the evolution of data privacy and revisit some of the most frequently asked questions on fundamental privacy research, such as, “Who is the biggest threat to privacy (government, social media, advertisers, data brokers, big data and analytics, ourselves...)? What are the most promising technological solutions for protecting privacy? What are the most over-hyped? Is privacy really dead?” I will identify a number of important privacy challenges in the critical phases of the big data computation life cycle and share some of my visions toward transformative development of data privacy -- from the concept of privacy to the protection of privacy in the life cycle of big data.
BIO | Ling Liu is a professor in the School of Computer Science at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She directs research programs in the Distributed Data Intensive Systems Lab (DiSL) -- examining various aspects of large-scale data intensive systems, including performance, availability, security and privacy. Liu’s current research is primarily sponsored by NSF, IBM and Intel.
Liu is an elected IEEE Fellow and a recipient of IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award in 2012. She has published more than 300 international journal and conference articles and is a recipient of the best paper award from several leading conferences, including ICDCS 2003, WWW 2004, 2005 Pat Goldberg Memorial Best Paper Award, IEEE Cloud 2012, IEEE ICWS 2013, ACM/IEEE CCGrid 2015, and the IEEE Symposium of BigData 2016. In addition to serving as general chair and program committee chairs for numerous IEEE and ACM conferences (regarding data engineering, very large databases, distributed computing, cloud computing and big data), she also has served on the editorial board of more than a dozen international journals. Currently, Liu is the editor in chief of IEEE Transactions on Service Computing.
